The Fiming of our
Moving and Handling of People
In November 2018, I attended our 3 Day Moving & Handling of People Instructor Course run by our Moving & Handling Expert, Alan Reed. This 3 Day Course was filmed by local videographer, Brian Barnes of Activideo, as our Director Gareth Milner had decided to produce a Course Explainer Video (available to watch on this link) to allow Care and Clinical Services Professionals to gain an insight into the structure and high quality delivery of our Instructor Programmes. Osteopathic Solutions' Manchester based Consultant Jose Fernandez also attended.
Our Chosen Videographer: Activideo Communications
Activideo Communications are a Manchester based video production company with a 27 year track record in using moving image to actively communicate their message. Brian Barnes is the Director of the business with many years of filming under his belt for companies such as Asda, Boohoo and various ITV publications.

Why did we decide to film a Moving & Handling of People Explainer Video?
It is no secret that video marketing is a major trend. User engagement with video material is higher than other forms of content, video is more accessible than ever before (thanks to mobile devices and faster Internet), and it is easier to produce than it has been in previous generations.
One of the best ways to start is with an explainer video, which is designed to give new users a run-down of what your products or services are, and how they work, in the span of a few minutes.
The Practicality of Video
Why aren’t more businesses using explainer videos and other types of video marketing? Part of the problem is a perceived impracticality of video; because a video has historically been expensive and time-consuming to produce, businesses would rather stay toward more straightforward, cheaper methods. However, video production is growing more affordable as technological resources become more sophisticated and more available.
In the words of Robert Weiss, “Business decision makers love online video because it gives them the most amount of information in the shortest amount of time.” They’re generally only a few minutes long, allowing for those interested in your services to find out exactly what they need to know, in a reasonable time frame.
They show a problem and a solution
Video progresses linearly with time, which means you can show a chain of causality from problem to solution. Illustrating how your products or services solve a customer need is incredibly valuable for securing more conversions and improving client relationship. This can be accomplished through written content, but it doesn’t have the same effect.
They can be used anywhere
Once you make an explainer video, you can use it in a number of different contexts. You can keep it on YouTube, you can embed it into the homepage of your site, you can use it as a feature of your landing page, or even incorporate it into slideshow presentations. They’re short and universal enough to transfer easily.
They’re useful for new and old clients and a great form of CPD Refresher Training
Even though the primary function of an explainer video is to reach new audiences, they can be useful for established clients as well. This is especially true if there’s a learning curve with your products and services; the explainer video can serve as a kind of tutorial or a form of CPD refresher training. As Savannah Stewart (Social Media Specialist) explains, “many of us have become more comfortable learning visually. Delivering information on a product, service or company through video can help to keep your audience’s attention longer and make what you have to say more easily understood.”
You can show off the benefits first-hand.
Thanks to the visual and running nature of video, you can show off the benefits of your product or service first-hand, such as with a brief product demonstration. This helps people see what they’re buying and will put many of their doubts to rest.
You can show your brand personality.
You can let your brand’s personality shine throughout the video; you can write it in the tone of your script, include visual styles that reflect your character, and even choose a narrator that best represents your brand “voice.” In fact, more than a third of all video marketing budgets are now directed toward branded videos.
Our Research Beforehand
Before commencing this Moving and Handling of People Explainer Video Project, a part of my job role was to research other Moving and Handling companies who had already produced an Explainer Video and the quality as well as content of their productions to see what we were up against.
Upon going through the explainer videos of various well-known companies, I was quite shocked at some of what was on offer on the internet. The first Explainer Video which came up on Google for a well-known company was extremly outdated and lacking high quality content.
The majority of content I came across was dull and uninteresting. I continued to search and didn't come across anything inspiring which in some ways was good, as it meant Osteopathic Solutions Explainer Video would (hopefully!) stand out from the rest.
The venue in which we chose to film this Moving & Handling of People DVD was our Manchester Moving & Handling of People Venue; Redbank House.
Redbank House is one of our fully equipped Moving & Handling training venues across the UK. It is conveniently located on the Northern side of Manchester city centre, a short 5 minute walk from Manchester Victoria Station. It is ideal for attendees travelling from the Midlands, North Wales, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and of course Greater Manchester.

Example Clip: Sitting to Lying Down Supine
Click play to view this clip as an example of the type of content Brian filmed for our Moving & Handling Explainer video. In the video clip below Alan was demonstrating Sitting to Lying down Supine using a slide sheet with the assistance of Osteopathic Solutions’ Director Gareth Milner, all filmed by Brian Barnes of Activideo.
The Transfer: Ensure the bed's breaks are on. 2 Handlers are best practice, although 1 handler may be possible. Adjust the bed to a height that ensures the person's feet are flat on the floor. Raise the head end of the profile bed. Fold the flat sheet and place it on the bed so that half of the sheet comes off the bed. Tuck this between the bed and the mattress. Make sure the person does not sit on 2 sliding surfaces.
One handler is behind the person gripping the folded flat sheet with both hands with one knee bent on the bed (this reduces the forward bending of the spine) The other handler now frees the flat sheet from under the mattress and with a squatting posture, facing square on to the person's legs, brings the flat sheet to scoop the person's lower legs. The handler behind the person maintains their support of the folded sheet The person is encouraged to push with their arms into the mattress to move themselves into the centre of the mattress towards the raised head end of the profile bed. At the same time the handler 'lifts' the legs with a squat lift and moves their feet as the person pushes themselves to the centre of the mattress. The head of the profile bed is lowered and the slide sheet is removed.
